PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Ladies and Sponsors,

It’s February and we are already half way through this term. Time flies when you are having fun - and I’m having a blast!

I want to congratulate Carol Allen for being selected our 2004 Rose of the Year. All of our Roses are special deserving women who go above and beyond to support our organization. NNL is truly blessed to have such outstanding women.

I would also like to express my appreciation to all the club chairs that participated in the January luncheon. Feedback from the program, "There is no such thing as too much fun", has been extremely positive. Each of you deserves an atta-girl!

The Social Committee and the Ways & Means Committee are eagerly planning Viva Las Vegas, our spring social and fundraiser. The excitement is really starting to build. I encourage you to mark your calendars for Friday, March 4th and plan on having a great time! You will be able to dance the night away, enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, and use "funny money" at the game tables to win great prizes. This will be a wonderful opportunity to invite a guest or prospective member to join in the excitement. Reserve your tickets now by contacting a member of the Social Committee. Tickets will also be available at our coffees and luncheons.

Remember, if you see, or hear of, someone new moving into your neighborhood, please introduce yourself and tell them about New Neighbors. Be sure to forward the contact information to the Prospective Membership Committee. We would love to invite them to a New Neighbors function to show them what we have to offer!

Smiles are contagious; let’s start an epidemic!

Candy Duncan

President

Rose of the Month

Our fun-loving February Rose was born in Southwest Missouri to a Mom who was a very sophisticated lady and a Dad with a great sense of humor. Sounds like our Rose got the best traits from both. She graduated from Neosho High School, home of the Mighty Wildcats (somehow this seems fitting!)

It was then off to Drury College, a private liberal arts college in Springfield, Missouri, where she majored in Social Work. As luck would have it CRIME brought her in contact with a charming young man named Pat. They saw each other at the city jail, the county jail and the federal prison all on field trips from Crime Class.

Living the life of crime was not for our Rose. She married this charming Pat and has been happily married for 46 years. In her words "We have had a lot of fun together!" Pat, a geologist, was employed in Illinois,

California and Kansas before settling down for 25 years in Midland, Texas. They have three children. Kevin is a CPA and bachelor from Houston. Suzanne, a former school teacher, lives in Austin with her husband and three daughters Merrill, 15 and twins Laura and Lizzie, 10. Their youngest son Tim is a Licensed

Counselor with MHMR and lives in Midland with his new wife as of last year.

Our Rose worked as a Social Worker in child welfare until her children were born. She felt fortunate to be able to stay at home with her children. She was the typical "take your kids everywhere" Mom. Moving was never easy, but she realized when it happened, to grow where you are planted and life would be much happier.

Our Rose CHOSE to move to Corpus Christi. They came down to check out places for retirement three times for three months each time. Just ask them anything about restaurants in this town – they know! They decided to build a house and their realtor told her about NNL.

Our Rose joined NNL after being here 9 months and immediately went to work on the telephone committee, where she has served for 4 terms. She has graciously hosted numerous coffees in her home. She even was seen modeling at a style show for the VIPS. Our Rose also enjoys the Antique Club and Couples Dining Out. For our Rose, NNL has been wonderful! It is always hard to meet people after moving and especially meeting a variety of people of all ages. This young at heart Rose thinks it is great to meet young people.

Our Rose is especially fond of the color blue. She thinks the world would be a better place if it could be dipped in chocolate after painting it blue. Her hobbies are shopping for bargains at antique shops, flea

markets, junk shops and her new favorite "The Dollar Zone". This lady loves a bargain! It may even be her middle name.

Our Rose describes herself as FUN! She believes it is easier to laugh than cry! Her friends describe her as classy but unpretentious, kind and gracious and fun to be around. However, the most important thing to know about our Rose is that she is a tireless crusader against bad luck when she assumes her alter ego as the "voodoo princess," according to fellow crusader, Treva Miles.

Congratulations to our February Rose, Julie Brower.

Sunshine Column

While on Christmas holiday in Oklahoma, Kae Martin dropped in on Sharon Leshika, a former member of NNL.  Sharon now lives in Mustang, OK and sent a "hello" to everyone in NNL and thinks of us often.  Kae reports that Sharon is keeping busy at her girl's schools and decorating her new home that has an unusual color on the walls.  Contact her to find out!

Brenda Pitz is happy to say her daughter just graduated from college and will be visiting for a month in Corpus.  She hopes to find a job soon and will go anywhere south of Grand Forks, ND which includes most of the US. Brenda will make sure she meets a lot of her NNL friends during her visit .

Cat Longoria wanted to share the wonderful Christmas present she received from her husband Richard.  He is a very talented writer, but his position at Channel 3 does not give him much time for himself.  He made the time throughout the month of December to compile twelve (12) beautiful poems of love for every year he and Cat have been married.  This is a testament  to his revived interest for his passion and his love for Cat.  All of Cat's girlfriends have read it and fell in love with the book!

Roger and Margie Schroeder enjoyed three weeks, 4000 miles, 9 states, celebrating Christmas in 4 states, eating, sightseeing, eating, shopping till they dropped, eating and spending a wonderful time with family.

Susie Wright's parents, John and Mary Cox have arrived in Corpus for their winter stay on the island.  Welcome to our Winter Texans.

Karl and Mollie Zick trekked across half of the United States to visit their daughter and family in Raleigh, NC.  This was a test of endurance for both the Zicks and their new Honda Accord.  Both made it without any breakdowns, hospital visits, food poisoning, or bad weather so they can definitely say it was a wonderful Christmas vacation.

Susie Wright wanted to thank all the volunteers that helped over Christmas and those that painted the Children's and Family Rooms at the Salvation Army.

Rose of the year 2004

Carol Allen

Carol Allen, our 2004 Rose of the Year, is a picture of what New Neighbors League is all about. She truly never meets a stranger and has that innate ability to soothe the anxiety that comes from being in a new or different environment.

She is always among the first to volunteer any time there is a need, but her time is not the only thing she volunteers. Now, it may not be so unusual for her to offer the use of her home for a coffee, but to make such an offer at a time when she would be out of town is unimaginable. Carol always seems to add an extra spark to any event. Who else can you think of that, without blinking an eye, can transform from sophisticated lady to lingerie model and back.

Thanks Carol for all you do for

New Neighbors League.

NNL Luncheon Minutes

January 13, 2005

President, Candy Duncan called the January 13, 2005 luncheon of the New Neighbors League of Corpus Christi to order, and welcomed our guests who were in attendance.

Candy than read our prayer, and lunch was served.

After lunch, Candy introduced the executive board and advisors. She also acknowledged our Past Presidents Carol Allen, Jackie Del Nano, Ruth Williams, and Joyce Seitz.

She then recognized Kay Kilborn with Dr. Vaughn’s office as one of our sponsors that was with us today, and she recognized Glenda Fisher and Julie Stark with the Town Club. Candy then announced that Dr. Vaughn was not with us today, because he was preparing for his Neurology Board Exam and would soon be accepting patients with vertigo, dizziness, and balance disorders, as well as continue seeing patients with neck and back pain and headaches. She then read an announcement by the Town Club inviting NNL members to "Raid The Wine Cellar". An evening of wine tasting and food on January 21st from 7-11p.m.

Sally Galyon, Prospective Member Chair said we had 14 prospective members and guests with us today. She had the prospective members come up to the podium and introduce themselves to the club.

Sylvia Whitworth, Membership Chair introduced our newest members to NNL: Ruby Gabelmann, Scarlett Bowling, Betty Ellison, and Doreen Quinones.

Vice-President, Brenda Pitz introduced our program titled, "There Is No Such Thing As Too Much Fun". A representative from each club got up and spoke about the various clubs that are offered by New Neighbor’s League. It was a wonderful opportunity for new and prospective members to see what they can get involved in. All the representatives did a great job and it was very informative and entertaining.

Candy Duncan then asked the Rose from each month to come up and receive a gift in their honor as Candy shared a little about each one. She then announced the "Rose for 2004", and the winner was Carol Allen.

Our Social Chair, Jennifer Oler reminded everyone about our social "Viva Las Vegas" which will be on March 4th from 8-12 p.m. at the Omni Bayfront Hotel. It will be a night of food, dancing, and gambling (with funny money). There will also be raffles and prizes. She said that tickets would be $25 a person and $30 for non-members. She said they could hold your check until March 4th if anyone needed.

Sylvia Whitworth announced our January birthdays, and Jimmy Compton won our birthday drawing.

The advisors handed out door prizes and the 50/50 drawing was held. Gwen Seeger a prospective member won $37.50.

Circle of Caring Prayer Requests

Our condolences and prayers to Gerry Hackley and family on the loss of Gerry's husband's mother, Alice "Dexie" Hackley who passed away January 8th in Houston.  She lived in Corpus Christi from 1940-1951 with her husband and four children. They owned Hackley's Men's Store here in Corpus Christi.

Our prayers for a speedy recovery to Pam Gordon who had surgery on both feet on January 14th.

Also prayers for a former member Kim Woodall who moved to Houston this summer.  She will be having female surgery sometime in February and requests prayers for her speedy recovery.

Hearts and Hands Projects

Red Cross Fund-raiser.  Carol Allen is trying to get a table together at this event of NNL.  If interested call Carol for details.

Salvation Army Dolls and Bears Fund-raiser.  We need ladies to dress dolls and bears for this event.  The dolls and bears are furnished and all you need to do is dress them.  You may either make the outfit or buy it. They go to the kids at Christmas or into the sale (there is a doll judging for ribbons) and the proceeds from the sale go to buy more dolls and bears to give to the kids.  The dolls are not needed until September but you can get yours now to start on.  Call Kae Martin or Susie Wright for more info.

Driscoll Children's Hospital Gift Center.  We are looking for gifts age appropriate for teenagers.  Driscoll give each new admit a gift and any child in the hospital on their birthday receives a nicer gift. Gifts and cash donations gladly accepted. Call Bobbie Sue Doye for more info.

Shelter needs.  We have ongoing collection of personal hygiene and clothing items for the various shelters in the city.

Donating is easy, just call Susie Wright, 986-9619 to arrange a pick up or bring items to the coffees and luncheons.

Thank You from Hearts and Hands.
