President’s Message
Dear Friend and Sponsors:
I hope you all have not melted away and are enjoying your summer. Where else could you go to enjoy a wonderful beach, lots of NNL activities, pleasant weather and find new and lasting friends?
The Fourth of July is just around the corner, so I hope you all will be safe in celebrating this joyous day. Three cheers for red, white and blue!!
There are lots of people moving this summer. Friends, we will dearly miss. We do wish them the best in their future endeavors. Let us try to keep in touch. In the meantime, let us focus on the new people moving in and telling them all about our fantastic club.
Time to begin marking your calendars:
September 8th - Mary Robinson, our Means and Ways Chair and her committee members, Scarlett Bowling and Caron Cabone are working hard on our Silent Auction. This will be held during our September luncheon and we hope each member will contribute a little something to help make this event a huge success. Whether it be a baked item, dinner for 4 (presented to the winner on a specific day), one of your lovely craft items, an item purchased or even a business coupon giving a discount. The committee is striving for reasonably priced items so everyone can be involved. This is how we make our money to run this wonderful club, so please think of how you can help!
September 17th - Carol Gigliotti, our Social Chair and her committee members, Sandra Richmond and Scarlett Bowling are planning the Tropical Bay Cruise for, Saturday, September 17th.. Wonderful appetizers, full course dinner, music, cash bar and a wonder cruise under the stars on the Royal Princess II. An evening you will never forget!
It is not what happens to you, but how you react to circumstances
That determines whether you will bloom where you are,
or dry up where you are.
So develop the habit of reacting positively to negative conditions.
Just a reminder, our July NNL luncheon (14th) will be held at the Country Club of Corpus Christi on Everhart instead of Kings Crossing Country Club.
I hope the rest of your summer is full of fun and friendship.
Sally Galyon

Rose of the Month

Our “Hotter than Heck” July Rose entered this world in San Angelo, Texas but soon moved to San Antonio. After five years of the “hectic life” in San Antonio, she and her family moved back to good old San Angelo where she lived for the next 40 years.
Bringing her to Corpus Christi is husband Gene, who was transferred with his job, Pool Company, on September 1, 2002. Living in an apartment the first six months, our rose commuted back and forth from San Angelo every weekend. She learned about New Neighbors from a realtor at an open house, gave them her name, attended the January coffee and luncheon, and “the rest is history.”
Our July Rose graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1975 and then attended one semester that fall at Angelo State University, majoring in secretarial science. She then married her high school sweetheart and took classes off and on.
In June, 1994, our Rose met Gene when a family friend invited him to her family’s ranch for the weekend. For their first encounter, she met him with no makeup on and in a bathing suit! She reminds us that she was much smaller then, but weren’t we all! She and Gene found that they had a lot in common – birthdays two days apart and two children that are both nearly the same age and with names that begin with the same letters. She and Gene have the same middle name and both are spelled G-e-n-e. They were both divorced the same year and their PIN numbers are one digit off. As she says, “How weird is that!”
After their marriage, she was able to make her education a priority and graduated from ASU in May, 2001, with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management – Cum Laude.
Our Rose has two sons, Wesley (22) and Skipper (25) and a daughter-in-law, Carrie. Skipper and Carrie have two BEAUTIFUL children Justin (5) and Aubrie (3). Gene has a son, Wade (23) and a daughter, Shanna (26) and son-in-law Jason.
NNL’s July Rose has been self-employed for the last eight years, owning a Medical Billing Service and being a consultant for local health plan training medical offices on practice management software.
She is quite humble, finding it difficult to describe herself. However, she finally admitted that she is friendly, thoughtful, optimistic, and dependable. Her friends add that she is a beautiful lady, both inside and out, loyal, and can be quite a comedienne.
Our Rose admits that New Neighbors has been the best thing she could have experienced in Corpus. It has given her the opportunity to meet so many fantastic women from many parts of the United States, and she has been lucky enough to have formed lifetime friendships. She adds that the whole concept of NNL is unique, but the clubs are what she enjoys most. She has held several positions on the Board – Coffee Chair, Social Chair, Club Coordinator, President, and is currently an Advisor. In addition, the July Rose has received the Fun and Friendship award for her hard work and dedication to the Mardi Gras Social.
She belongs to Bunco Brunch, Night Bunco, Movie Club, Lunch Bunch, Beer Tasting, Last Friday wine tasting, and is chair of both Vino Brio and Couples Game Night. No wonder Gene just wants to stay at home sometime.
“Miss July” loves to walk along the beach, listen to all kinds of music, and take trips with Gene. She says it doesn’t matter where they are going, they always find time to stop along the way for an antique store or just see what most people are in too big of a hurry to see. She loves to search out the wineries. She and Gene have been to more than 23 wineries in Texas and California. Her perfect vacation would be spending a summer in Napa Valley and tasting the wine along the way.
Ladies, you may know our July Rose by the name Candy Duncan, but to grandchildren Justin and Aubrie, she is Nonnie.

June 9, 2005

Sally presented Gloria Lopez the Fund and Friendship Award for her unselfish service beyond her normal Telephone Committee duties. There have been several occasions when the members of her committee have been out of town at the same time when phone calls had to be made. Gloria not only made all the phone calls, but she still had that glowing smile on her face.
Sally announced that Lyn Kitchens would be moving to Michigan. Sally gave a special note of thankfulness for all her hard work for NNL, and she stated how much NNL members would miss her.

Sally gave a special “Thank You” to Personally Yours Florist for donating the corsages for our Rose every month. She then asked Pam Gordon to come and introduce our June Rose, Christy Rutledge.
Sally presented Christy with the Rose pin for making NNL a better club for all of us. Pam read a lovely bio on our Rose and told of her many accomplishments. Christy spoke of how much NNL had meant to her for all the fun and friendship that NNL provides. Christy recognized and spoke of each of the special guests sitting at her table and of all the special friends she has through NNL.

The advisors handed out door prizes and the 50/50 drawing was held. Ruth Miller won $29.00. Sally Moehrke won the Hearts & Hands summer basket that had been donated by Susie Wright. The May Hearts and Hands Raffle purse was donated by Glenda Tvrdik.
Hearts and Hands:
Hearts and Hands is an extension of NNL’s mission, to bring people together, give generously of ourselves, be friendly and kind and to always greet someone with a smile. Our desires with this club are to expand our social horizons into our community, give our talents, time, financial and material support where needed, to help brighten someone’s day. We appreciate everyone’s support of our cause. Rests assured that all monies collected from the Raffles and donated items, are accounted for and go directly to our chosen Projects. Again, we thank you.
2nd Quarter Project is Dress for Success. This program provides counseling and clothing to women with limited financial resources who are seeking Employment. These ladies are able to choose a business dress outfit and a casual outfit. Shoes, hosiery, purses, make-up, jewelry and other personal items are also available. If you are cleaning out your closet and you find that you have any business or dress items or any other personal items you would like to donate, please contact Susie Wright, Bobbie Sue Doye’, Kae Martin or Marcia Mayes.
3rd Quarter Project will be Boken Camp. This is a lock down facility for displaced children that cannot be placed in any foster care setting due to severe emotional and behavioral problems which cause some of them to cut or self-mutilate. Their trauma is caused from severe physical, emotional, mental and other abuses. We are in the process of finding out more information about this facility and how we can help brighten and give hope to these young fragile children. We will inform you when we have further details.
4th Quarter Project will be phone cards for local military to use that are deployed, confined in a hospital or rehabilitation center, or for the spouse’s use to have contact with their loved ones. We are also investigating if there is a need for funds for online communication for connection charges, or more equipment to install to provide additional ports of online communication allowing more family contact with loved ones. We will be contacting the USO and Naval Relief Society for more information. This project will mean so much to all military and their families since it will occur during the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season. If you would like to donate a phone card or funding, please contact Susie Wright, Bobbie Sue Doye’, Kae Martin or Marcia Mayes.
The June raffle for the garden basket was won by Sally Moelke and raised $68 for Dress for Success. The July raffle for Bokenkamp Children's Home will be personalized hand decorated flip flops with matching hair scrunchie or can coozie by Kae Martin.
The July Luncheon will meet at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
