President’s Message

Well, it is that time of year again. Summer is here, school is out, the kids are so thankful and the moms are out of their routine.  Just sit back and have a great conversation with friends.  NNL coffees and luncheons are the perfect way to keep cool during the summer.

Please be sure to check with your Chairs to find out if your activity continues during the summer months or ceases until the Fall.  Our coffee and luncheons never take a break, so encourage your friends and neighbors to join our next function.

If you are planning a vacation, don't forget to let Mollie Zick, our Sunshine Chair, know about all the great places you will be visiting.  We love to hear about your fun trips.

Caring and Sharing flowing

To water....

Seeds of Love sowing

To blossom into

Beautiful Friendship Growing

Bloom where you are planted

across this land

And side by side

Friends Will Stand

In summary, be on the look out for those who need fun and friendship.  We are so fortunate to have had someone reach out their hand in friendship to us!  Our club has so much to offer to all types of women, so with the roots we have settled in Corpus Christi, let's continue to grow and focus on fun and friendship.

Enjoy your summer and stay cool!!

    Rose of the Month

The first rose of summer, our June Rose, was born in Ames, Iowa, spending her elementary years in Springfield, Virginia.  In the seventh grade her family moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas, where she graduated from High School and is the place she considers “home.

After high school, our Rose went on to college at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and graduated with a BA in Business Administration and Fashion Merchandising.  Now, we know why she always looks so cute and stylish.

She and her husband Cliff moved to Corpus Christi from Austin, Texas, almost three years ago due to Cliff’s job with Whataburger.  Also moving with them were daughters Caitlyn (13), Chandler (9), and Carley (6) and the family pets - two dogs, one cat and three fish.

Speaking of Cliff, they went to high school together and started dating when she was a senior in high school and he a sophomore in college.  It was such a big deal because she wasn’t allowed to date anyone who was in a grade higher than hers.  However, they had a big family meeting to discuss the situation, and after much persuasion her parents said, “Okay.”  Three years later they were married.

Cliff and our Rose finished college and were taking all the appropriate measures for birth control to give themselves time to become established in their respective careers.  Cliff was away on business and had made his usual nightly phone call home when she broke the news to him that they were “PREGNANT.”  His first response was “HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?!”  She proceeded to tell him that if he wasn’t aware of how that happened, then that was probably why they were in this mess.  It was a quick adjustment to their long-term plan, but three beautiful girls later, they agree that they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our June Rose is a stay-at-home mom and wife who is very active in her church and choir and praise team and who also teaches the preschool choir.  She describes herself as sincere, kind, helpful, and cheerful.  Friends add that she is beautiful, generous, patient, not afraid to tackle difficult tasks, devoted to her family, and has an infectious laugh.

Our Rose says about NNL, “I can’t think of a better friend than NNL to someone moving to a new area.  It helps you get plugged in to your new surroundings so quickly and smoothly and offers opportunities to enjoy other than the hectic, normal everyday activities.”

She just completed her 2-year term with New Neighbors and is currently an advisor.  Having held three terms on the coffee committee, two terms as Name Tag Chair, and a stint as secretary, she has also modeled for the annual fashion show and has been honored with the Fun and Friendship award.  She participates in Secret Pals, Wine Tasting, Afternoon Bunco, and the Lunch Bunch.

As you can see, our June Rose stays busy.  If she ever finds spare time, she enjoys singing, swimming, going to the beach, working in the yard, but most of all, basks in the opportunity to play with her family.  And who wouldn’t with those three precious little girls!

When you walk into a room, just look for the lady with the bright, spontaneous smile on her face and you will find our June Rose.

NNL Luncheon Minutes

May 12, 2005

Vice President, Jane Cheesman, filled in for  President, Sally Galyon, and she called the May 12, 2005 luncheon of the New Neighbors League of Corpus Christi to order, and welcomed our guests who were in attendance.

Jane read our prayer, and lunch was served.

After lunch,  Jane introduced our guest speaker Dr. Dina Eftimesu, and her assistant, Juanita Bozarth.  Dr. Eftimesu is with the Corpus Christi’s Women Care Center and she spoke on Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Awareness.  She gave an excellent and informative presentation and she answered a few questions from members.

Jane then introduced two new board members:  Jo Ann Robertson, Secretary, and Judy Holloway, Treasurer.  Jane asked Candy Duncan to come forward and presented her with the Gold President’s Charm for her outstanding cheerful service as President for New Neighbors.

Jane then recognized the Board advisors:  Pam Gordon, Joyce Seitz, Julie Brower, and Christy Rutledge.  She also acknowledged our past Presidents who were present:  Pam Gordon, Joyce Seitz, Candy Duncan, Jackie Del Nano and Carol Allen.  She recognized Dr. Vaughn as our sponsor who was with us today.

Jane presented Judy Holloway the Fund and Friendship Award for her unselfish service beyond her normal Treasurer duties.

Celeste Guemsey, our assistant Prospective Member, introduced the prospective members that were with us today, and Jana Gann, our Membership Chair, introduced our two new members.

Jane recognized our guests:  Bobbie Sue Doye (our May Rose) with her husband Rob; Julie Brower brought Rene Baker as her guest.

Jane gave a special “Thank You” to Personally Yours Florist for donating the corsages for our Rose every month.  She then asked Pam Gordon to come and introduce our May Rose, Bobbie Sue Doye.

Jane and Pam presented Bobbie Sue with the Rose pin for making NNL a better club for all of us.  Pam read a lovely bio on our Rose and told of  her  many accomplishments.  Bobbie Sue spoke of how much NNL had meant to her.  She recognized and spoke of each of the special guests sitting at her table and others who were unable to attend the luncheon.

Jane  announced the May birthdays.  The advisors handed out door prizes and the 50/50 drawing was held.  Sylvia Thomas won $34.00.  Linda Merkel won the Hearts & Hands purse that had been donated by Glenda Fischer.

Announcements to be noted:

1.  Luncheon reservations for members over 2 years should call Susie Wright, our Reservation Chair.  Members less than 2 years will be called by Gloria Lopez and her telephone committee.

2.  The VIP luncheon will be held on May 24th at the Corpus Christi Country Club with the program and fashion show by Julian Gold.

3.  The next coffee is June 2nd at 10 a.m. at the home of Candy Duncan.  The Board meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m.

4.  The next luncheon is June 9th at 10:45 at the Corpus Christi Town Club.

A THANK YOU:

Thanks to Mary Cox for donating her Sanddollars from June 1989 until the present.  I am keeping them at my house.  We now should be able to get accurate answers to "what happened when" in Corpus Christi NNL.  If anyone has Sanddollars before that time and would be wiling to give to our archive collection, please let me know at 986-9175.

Some interesting things found in this issue were:

There were 7 new members - the exact number that we had last month (one was too late to be included in the Sanddollar)

There were 6 "eating" clubs, including "Eaters Unlimited", of which Mary Cox is now the Club Chair, 4 Bunco clubs, 11 Bridge clubs, 9 Mom & Tot type clubs, etc.

There were 21 Sponsors and 5 Civic Sponsors

There were 70 people on the Board, including 7 Prospects Assistants, 15 Telephone Assistants, a Sanddollar Staff of 9 members, including a Typist Chairman, 3 Assistant Typists and an Art Director.  (I realize that computers were not that User Friendly back then, but the magazine looks pretty sad compared to our lovely one that is done by one person.)

There were 2 choices for lunch at Kings Crossing Country Club:  A complete meal for $7.95 or a salad plate for $6.00

Valerie Caldwell had been the New Neighbor of the Month (now called the Rose) for the prior month and she served on the Board as the City Hostess.  There were three Assistant City Hostesses and a City Hostess Advisor.  (At some point, she became the Club Director/Area Manager and held that position until 1999, I think.)

Meet Your Board…. featuring the Coffee Committee

Linda Dorsey - Coffee committee Chair

Linda moved here in 1968 from Fort Bragg, North Carolina and joined NNL in November, 2004.  She keeps busy with The Book Club, Bunco, Bridge club, Circle of Caring and Heats & Hands.  Linda’s other interests include reading, Politics and Real Estate.  She says the most important factor in Real Estate is “location’ location’ location”.  In NNL, the factor is “great people, caring people, fun people”.

Cynthia “Cyndy” Pagan - Coffee Committee

Cyndy came to us from Alvin, Texas in March, 2004 and joined NNL in March 2005.  She is enjoying Bunco, Creative Craft Club, First Movie Club, Couples Game Night and the Bridge Club.  She also enjoys reading, crafts and computer games.  Cyndy says the best thing about NNL is meeting new and fun people.

Ruby Gabelmann - Coffee Committee

Ruby came from Vernal, Utah in Sept, 2002 and joined NNL in December 2004.  She had joined Bunco, Creative Craft Club, First Movie Club, Lunch Bunch and Hearts & Hands.  She likes crafting, travel, movies shopping and family time.  Ruby thinks the best thing about NNL is meeting new people and having the opportunity to participate in so many different activities.

Angelica Santillan - Coffee Committee

Angelica moved here from La Place, Louisiana in June, 2003 and joined NNL in March 2005.  She has not joined any clubs yet but will soon.  Her interests include gardening, travel, photography, movies and spending time with her family.  Angelica says the best thing about NNL is meeting new friends.

Michele Bolich - Coffee Committee

Michele moved from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1999 and joined NNL in April, 2005.  She has joined Mom and Tot’s Playgroup, and Starfish Playgroup.  Her interests include computer, children, family and reading.

Editor’s Note:  Hat’s off to this hard working group of ladies who set up food for the coffee each month and clean up  afterwards.  They are usually the first to arrive and the last to leave.  Speaking as a  past coffee committee member, I highly recommend joining this committee to anyone wanting  to make friends quickly as you will be interacting with everyone in a fun environment...also, it’s always fun to poke around in someone else’s kitchen and get ideas for your own.
