PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Friends and Sponsors,
I just got home from the luncheon and my very special Rose honor. It is so wonderful to be honored, but it was also wonderful to be able to honor George and my special friends that I have made during my two years as a member of New Neighbors. We all talk a lot about friendship and love.
I am in a renewal group that meets on Fridays. Actually, Mollie is also in the group. We are using The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren as our text. A lot of you have probably read it. It has been pretty popular. Coincidentally, I was reading our new lesson last night. Our chapter is that life is all about love. Life without love is really worthless. The dig here, though, is that we can’t only love those we have picked out to love, but also irritating, imperfect and frustrating people (like us).
He says that the best expression of love is time. Busyness is a great enemy of relationships. The greatest gift you can give someone is focused attention. It makes sense. Don’t we all enjoy time with the people we love?
Love also extends to our country. The women before us were tortured and went through hell to fight for the right that we might vote. It would be shameful if they went through all of that for us and we had carpool duties? We had to get to work? Our vote doesn’t really matter? It’s raining? The ability that we have to be able to go to the polls and vote for the people that we think are right to run our country is a right that those women fought for us. Be sure to go to the polls.
This is my last President’s message. Candy will do next month’s. She is going to be a wonderful President. We all bring something different to the office which is great. I wish Candy and the new Board lots of luck.
Thank you for allowing me this term.
Yours in Fun and Friendship,
Joyce

Marjorie Abner’s nephew, Daniel Hall is on the entertainment staff of the cruise ship "Rhapsody of the Seas", giving classes on Origami and lectures on E-Bay. He took Marjorie as a guest on a cruise from Galveston through the Caribbean stopping at Key West, Cozumel and Grand Cayman. Marjorie was one of eight winners allowed to participate in Talent Show Night. She played the grand piano in a full theater for an audience of 1,000 with spotlights and all. She received a baby Oscar and was on the ship’s TV. She felt like a celebrity afterward as many people on the ship approached her to say they enjoyed her performance. She was pampered, and the fun, wonderful food and shopping in quaint foreign shops made for a wonderful trip.
Margery Hinterman volunteers her free time to work with RX Assist in Portland on Tuesdays. It is a program to get free medications to people who qualify according to their income level. The medicines are from the drug companies. What a good project!
Charlsie Kimbrell spent ten, yes 10 days in Reno, Nevada. She went to the ANG (American Needlepoint Guild) seminar. While she was there she took a side trip to Salt Lake City to visit her nephew and his family.
Sally Moehrke went to several cities in Missouri on vacation. In St. Joe she participated in a Barbershop Quartet Convention, a fun learning experience. In Trenton she donated a painting to hang in the College Art Gallery in honor of her mother, Sarah Mock, who taught zoology, botany, chemistry and hygiene. Last she went to Springfield and Branson to be with friends.
Ouida Van Dyke says to all New Neighbors who asked about her husband, Jerry, that after three months he is back at work. She spent one month visiting him at the hospital, one month taking care of him at home, and one month entertaining him! "Thank you for caring" says Ouida.
Debbie Hernandez is welcoming her two new grandsons (twins!). They will be coming to "visit" for a year while their father is serving our country in Iraq. Debbie will need your help if anyone knows of cribs, swings, etc. for their visit. Debbie, hang in there – a year goes by so fast!
Margie Schroeder has good news. "Thank you for all the calls and prayers while I awaited medical test results. The news was wonderful – all is clear". Congratulations and best wishes for continued good health.
Tammie Mathis’s daughter will be getting married Nov. 5 in Corpus Christi. She and her new husband will be deployed to Italy for two years immediately after the wedding.
Jim and Sylvia Whitworth went with three other couples from the Bay Yacht Club to charter a sailboat in the Caribbean. The 51’ sloop was comfortable with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. They sailed from St. Vincent through the Grenadines to Grenada and back, stopping at the islands of Mustique, Bequia, Union Island, Tobago Cayes, and Canouan. They snorkeled, went scuba diving, shopped and ate very well. The weather was beautiful, but their stay at a resort in Barbados was shortened a day by the impending arrival of Hurricane Ivan. They spent the extra day admiring the Art Deco architecture and eating at the outdoor restaurants of South Beach in Miami.
Dave and Carol Allen traveled to Chicago in August for the wedding of their daughter, Teri to Mr. Paul Guercio. The whole family was in the wedding, including son David, the sons-in-law Jim and Danny, and Matthew, their 8 year old grandson was a junior groomsman (not to be confused with ringbearer, as Matt was quick to point out to everyone). Daughters Luci and Julie were Matrons of Honor. They had a wonderful time visiting family and friends and seeing the latest changes in downtown Chicago. Of course a meal of Chicago Pizza was a must. They also took in a White Sox game and the kids did a Cubs Game and Bears Football game also. The party atmosphere continued the next day with a birthday party for Luci’s 30th Birthday. "It’s great to visit family, but always makes you a little sad to come home to Corpus. Thank God for NNL!" says Carol.

Born in Bay City TX, our ROSE moved to El Campo, TX at a young age. The oldest of three children, she graduated as part of the infamous "Class of 57". After graduation she went on to college at Wharton Junior College where she not only stole the show by being a Starlet (Dancing Drill Team) but as a literary scholar where she won a creative writing contest and won the Best Dressed Cowgirl Contest. (Lucky for her she had a friend who rode in rodeos.) She went on to Sam Houston Teachers College and graduated with a degree in Art and Elementary Education with a minor in English. Our Rose began her teaching career at Eagle Lake and taught 3rd grade.
A young man named Frank from Louise, TX caught sight of our ROSE riding the bus to Wharton Junior College. This proved to be a popular place for this persistent gentleman. He, also a school teacher, found his way to teaching positions near her. They took a dance class together and danced away into marriage on May 28, 1962. They have just celebrated their 42nd anniversary.
After their marriage, they continued to teach for about 5 years and Frank changed jobs. Our ROSE had the opportunity to move around a lot with her husband’s jobs. They have lived in Seattle, WA, Houston, TX and Lake Charles, LA. While in Houston, our ROSE became a mom to Randy in 1970 and again in 1973 while in Lake Charles when Ronnie was born. After her children were born she became a fulltime mom (the busiest job of all!)
Both of our ROSE’s children have had careers in the military. Randy was an Army 82nd Airborne Desert Strom Paratrooper. He is married and has a son, Kyle (11) who is a cancer survivor and a 10 month old granddaughter, Tiffany with the initials of TNT, because she is dynamite. Ronnie is currently a Navy recruiter but has served on a nuclear submarine as a Torpedo Man’s Mate. He, too, is married and has a step son, Nick (3).
You never see our ROSE without her trademark – a thermal mug. This trademark started at a young age. Pictures, even before her marriage, find her gripping a thermal mug. Our ROSE is always one to be prepared!
Our ROSE moved to Corpus Christi with Frank’s job as Business Development Manager of Protherm. They have lived here since 2000. Introduced to NNL by Sherry DeClair, a Mary-Kay rep, proved to be just what she needed. Our ROSE believes that NNL is like a breath of fresh air to her. She was ready to get out of a rut and stretch and grow. In her own words there are "marvelous, friendly people in NNL". She has served for two terms on the Prospective Member Committee and one term on the Ways and Means Committee. She is involved in Couples Dining Out and Secret Pals
Our ROSE describes herself as talkative, compassionate, and friendly. She loves to play bridge, exercise (in spite of her arthritis), shop and travel (GO is her middle name). Her friends describe her as friendly, eager to help out and never afraid of a challenge. She is always willing and is great on following through whatever her task is.
So hoist your thermal mug and give a toast to our October ROSE!
